Coldplay's singer, Chris Martin, laughingly told the crowd that the group only returned to South Africa after 12 years "because we had to wait for a visa".
People streamed to the stadium early on Wednesday afternoon. About 47 000 tickets were sold for the concert. It was the first major music event in the Mother City's stadium since U2's 360° performance in February.
