Monday night was huge night for movie lovers and hip hop addicts, Ambwene Yesaya performed and y'all know he brings it!Mambo Club,the venue of most Zanzibar International Film Festival,AY sang most of his popular hits and gave his fans the privilege of hearing for the first time, a track that was destined to have been released at the World Cup finals but didnt due to 'unforeseen reasons',the track 'Warrior' depicts Africans as being warriors in that they managed to host the biggest football tournament on the planet.Also Zanzibar's Sultan King took to the stage and displayed a breathtaking performance with his exquisite dance moves accompanied by his dancers.
Tanzanian Movie stars, Steven Kanumba, Yvonne Cherry Yakub and Vincent Kigosi are the guests of honour at the 13th edition of Zanzibar International Film Festival ZIFF guests were also entertainment by a American Hip Hop artist Spec Boogie.
Before the concert, the organizers of ZIFF proved that the film festival wasn't only for the grown ups as Tinga Tinga tales, an animated series of short films premiered for the first time in Zanzibar.Claudia Lloyd, the producer of the tales revealed that the series of animation was all done in East Africa and tells a modern, young audience what really happened of why monkeys swing in the trees and flamingos stand on one leg.East
Africa’s largest film and arts festival will be taking place between July 10-18, 2010 in Zanzibar showcasing a broad spectrum of African and International creative works.Film lovers on monday saw the screening of Gloria to Gloriana; a Jamaican produced film is a rags to riches story of a young country girl, Gloria Minto, who was determined to make the most of life.Also other films to look out for are Ana’s Playground, (USA), The Award winning We Are Together, (South Africa), the creatively memorable Imani (Uganda), the unforgettable Motherland (USA), a Compilation of short films from Zimbabwe and many others.
What i like about the ZIFFs is its very traditional, they dint go out of their way to try to be modern, infact they de-modernised it and made it all African. Uplifting African film efforts.I still think African films need a lot more push though, in terms of quality and story line, it would be nice to have our movies internationally accredited donchu think? That way they'd have more market in sales because when we make mediocre films, we cant expect a boom in massive succeses can we? And the portrayal of African life and ways in film, how we embrace culture, our attitudes towards it really matter, i hate modernised African movies, I hate it when Africans try to be too modern,it just starts to look a bit trained and not natural. Lets be what we are, in films and real life.
