A painting of Nelson Mandela's body undergoing an autopsy rocked some rumors last week.
The painting is seen as a take on The Anatomy Lesson of Dr Nicolaes Tulp, a 17th Century masterpiece by Rembrandt which portrays an autopsy undertaken in front of a number of people. In the picture, Mr Mandela is lying on a table, while the late Nkosi Johnson, an Aids activist who died at the age of 12, performs the autopsy.A group of spectators, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former presidents FW de Klerk and Thabo Mbeki, and politicians Helen Zille and Trevor Manuel, look on.
The artist guilty of this art or should i say, crime, of painting our Mandela dead Yiull Damaso says his aim was to make people confront death.Rili? why dint you paint yaself dead then? Woulda done better donchu think?
"Nelson Mandela is a great man, but he's just a man... The eventual passing of Mr Mandela is something that we will have to face, as individuals, as a nation," he said.
come on! i would be a bit worried too if am alive and kicking it and people are already painting me as a dead man under an autopsy with other dead men..dont make sense to me! Dont even give me the 'this is art' crap.....you cant paint me dead! i'm not dead! And wen am dead paint my coffin Gademit!...dont paint my sad dead face...But why? I know painters a whole lot, being a poetess ( an artist maself ahem ahem) i should say there are always hidden meanings in paintings, painters love to do that, make us look stupid wen we say we 'understand' and direct us the wrong way, play with our minds....bt We arent stupid..we get it! stop painting alive and well people as dead! how do you think they feel? As if you anxious for their death?
