Tanzania needs about $2.0 billion (Sh2.6 trillion ) to implement its five-year electricity generation and distribution project.
Speaking at the 28th meeting of the executive committee of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the minister for Energy and Minerals, Mr William Ngeleja, however did reveal how the government was going raise the sum.
“We are working very hard to raise the money so as to implement these projects. But as you all know capital is the biggest challenge facing many African countries," said Mr Ngeleja. He said the government has already prepared a 25-year Power System Master Plan (PSMP) whose implementation would require Sh14.3 trillion ($ 11.0 billion).
It was reported that the generation capacity will have to increase to 6,500 MW from the current installation capacity of about 1,000MW. He said PSMP targets to increase the percentage of Tanzanians who have access to electricity from the current 14 percent to72.
Two of 72 companies which were licensed to prospect for the mineral have shown promising results. Opening the meeting earlier, Vice President Dr Ali Mohamed Shein called on the SAPP member countries to fast-track the interconnection projects. Dr Shein said generation and transmission projects such as Inga between Mozambique and Malawi and that of Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya should aim at reversing the diminishing generation capacity.
